About The Music Ministries
Music at the Cathedral
The Music Ministries of the Cathedral of St. Thomas More serve the Cathedral Parish and the Diocese of Arlington, VA. As the mother church of the Diocese of Arlington, The Cathedral of St. Thomas More is filled with wonderful choral and instrumental music throughout the liturgical calendar, from regular services, weddings and funerals to Diocesan events such as the Rite of Election, Confirmations, Deaconate and Priesthood Ordinations.
Since 1990 Dr. Richard P. Gibala has led the Cathedral’s Music Ministries, which include the Cathedral Choir, Handbell Ensemble, String Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Youth Choir and Hispanic Choir, as well as the Arlington Diocesan Choir and the Arlington Festival Choir.
“The treasury of Sacred Music is to be preserved and fostered with great care. Choirs must be diligently developed, especially in Cathedral Churches……”

There is a free-standing bell tower located on the South Lawn of the Cathedral, housing six bells cast in France by the Paccard Foundry. Completed in 1982, the Trinitas Bell Tower was renovated in 2010.
WHY WE SING AT MASS
“God has bestowed upon His people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the Giver of song, is present whenever His people sing His praises.”
