Sacristans

“Which is greater? The gift or the altar that makes it sacred?”
Matthew 23:19

In the seventh century, Isidore of Seville described the ministry of Sacristan as the “care of security, access, vestments, sacred vessels, books, oil, lamps and candles.” In modern days, Sacristans are responsible for all those items as well as coordinating with all the assigned lay ministers (Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Eucharist (EMHC), Lectors, Altar Servers, Ushers) to ensure that each liturgy is conducted with the utmost reverence and efficiency.

Sacristans usually perform their duties out of sight of the congregation, behind the Sanctuary in a quiet and prayerful manner. The Sacristan may sometimes be called upon to perform Lector or EMHC duties as needed.
